FAQ SummerLanguageSchool

I need an invitation to apply for a visa. How can I get one?

As soon as you have successfully registered for the SummerLanguageSchool and have paid the fee, we will send you the required invitation. The invitation will include a description of the course and confirmation that you have paid the fee.

Do I need a visa to attend the SummerLanguageSchool?

You can find an overviews of countries andtheir individual visa requirements on the homepage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.More detailed information is provided on the homepage of your respective embassy.

Where can I find accommodation in Berlin?

Berlin is well-prepared for visitors and has a lot of accommodations in central locations at every price range. For summer we recommend an early reservation. You can find an overview here:

Especially during the summer break, you may also find a room for rent in a shared apartment. In this way, you not only can save money, but you can also make new contacts and practise your language skills at home.

When should I register?

You should register as soon as possible since openings will be filled in order of registration.

How can I register?

To register, please fill in the online registration form.

You will receive a confirmation mail with the payment details for the course

fee. As soon as the fee has been transferred to our bank account, your

registration for the course is completed.

What types of teaching materials will be used in the SummerLanguageSchool?

You will be given a reader, free of charge. Advanced learners will mainly be working with material from the areas of science and recent media reports. These will be complemented by worksheets that are meant for consolidating language structure and vocabulary. You will also work with videos and audio texts.

Less advanced learners will acquire basic language skills by using practical material that will make you fit for university and everyday life. You will also work with the internet, videos, audio texts and recent media reports.

Will I get ECTS for participating in the SummerLanguageSchool?

Yes, you will earn the following ECTS for taking part in the SummerLanguageSchool:
SummerLanguageSchool German Intensive Course: 5 ECTS
SummerLanguageSchool Deutsch Basic Course: 4 ECTS
You will earn these ECTS provided that you participate regularly and that you pass all possible tests or a final.

Will I get a certificate for my participation in the SummerLanguageSchool?

After finishing the course, you will receive a certificate of participation including the content and the level of your course.

I want to study or do a doctorate at a German university. Can the SummerLanguageSchool prepare for university?

Definitely, because in an intensive course, you can gain the language skills you need for your studies and everyday life. Not only will you receive practical information about how to manage at university, but you will also learn more about science and research in Berlin.

I am not a student of one of the above-mentioned subjects. Can I still participate in the SummerLanguageSchool?

The SummerLanguageSchool is designed for the subjects of science, mathematics, engineering, planning, building and environment. The curriculum targets vocabulary, language structure, different types of texts and communication that are particularly relevant for these subjects. The science and research modules in the afternoon

(SummerLanguageSchool German - Intensive Course) also focus on these fields of study.

If your subject is related to one of the above-mentioned subjects, the SummerLanguageSchool might well be appropriate for you, too. If you are studying something completely different, we don’t recommend taking part in the SummerLanguageSchool. If you’re not sure, just send us an e-mail.

Which level of German or English do I need to participate in the SummerLanguageSchool?

The SummerLanguageSchool German offers courses from level A1.2 to C1. You should have at least a basic knowledge of German (minimum 75 hours of German).

You can use the self-assessment grid to determine your linguistic skills. You can also check your level with a more detailed online test after your registration.
