These courses will take place in class in HBS.
Entry requirement:
- B2 as outlined in the CEFR
Before registering: The ZEMS online placement test is mandatory for students who have not completed a B2 level course at the ZEMS in the last two semesters. The test result should be equivalent to the course entry requirement. The test result must be submitted to class on the first day of teaching. You will be asked to leave the course if your placement test result is not equivalent to the entry requirement.
Course description: This course is designed to support the development of academic language competencies across the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will become more self-critical writers as a result of writing and editing their own and others' work and they will analyse language and structures in articles, essays and other literature. Students will broaden their understanding of ideas and arguments through the language of lectures, talks, debates and podcasts, with group and pair work providing opportunities for speaking and constructive reflection and peer feedback.
Regular attendance is mandatory from the first day of teaching (minimum 80% attendance).

English for Academic Purposes - Academic Writing Skills and Oral Presentation Skills C1
These courses will take place in the classrooms of ZEMS in HBS

Course Description: This course is designed to support the
development of academic language competencies across the four skills of
reading, writing, listening and speaking with a specific focus on academic oral
and written communication skills. Grading will be based on a set of
integrated assignments. To successfully complete the course, students will need
to complete self-study and in-class assignments (such as individual and group
presentations, interviews, writing response papers), submit an academic paper
and give a presentation.
Course Materials: Course materials will be provided by the instructor.
Regular attendance to online meetings is mandatory from the first day of teaching (minimum 80% attendance).

English for Academic Purposes - Career Communication Skills C1
This course will take place in class / HBS

Before registering: For self-assessment, the online placement test is required if students have not completed a B2 course at the ZEMS in the last two semesters. The result should be equivalent to the course entry requirement. Please bring the result with you to class on the first day of teaching. You will be asked to leave the course if your placement test result is not equivalent to the entry requirement.
Course description: This course is designed for students who wish to improve their language skills for employment and internships. Students will choose a position that they are interested in applying for and will write a CV and application (covering) letter, as well as participate in interview role-plays geared to their chosen positions. Presentations on topics relevant to their fields of study are also course requirements. Students will submit coursework throughout the semester and all materials must be turned in by their given deadlines.
Course Materials: Course materials will be provided by the instructor.

English for Specific Purposes: Sustainability C1
This course will take place online. Two course sessions will take place live (see course description below).

The result should be equivalent to the course entry requirement. Please bring the result with you to class on the first day of teaching. You will be asked to leave the course if your placement test result is not equivalent to the entry requirement.
Course description: Communicating sustainability: If you are interested in how to talk and write about sustainability, even if you are new to the topic, you are welcome to take this course. You will learn and apply C1.2 level English communication skills (focusing on different English registers such as formal vs. informal English) while simultaneously learning about sustainability through best-practice examples of sustainability communicators and from your peers during group work. You will choose your own topics for two graded projects, making the course as ‘tailor-made’ to your needs and interests as possible. Two sessions will take place as class-excursions within Berlin (The dates and places will be announced during the course). If you are not in Berlin and cannot attend the excursions, I will give you alternative assignments.
