Previous Offers: Webinar: English as a Medium of Instruction During the Online Semester: Challenges and Potential Solutions

On 22.07.2020, we conducted our first webinar and created a productive exchange between instructors who teach in English, students who take courses that are taught in English, and instructors of English who provided language-focused strategies and tips about using English as a medium of instruction. Below you can find the details of the webinar, moderators and the panelists. The feedback we received from the academic staff of TU Berlin was very positive, especially for early-career academics who are beging to teach in English.

What is this webinar about?

This webinar aims to create a platform to identify and resolve the specific challenges that the research and teaching staff at TU Berlin, as well as people from other academic institutions, have encountered during the online semester of 2020.

In this webinar, Emre Yeşilbaş (English as a Medium of Instruction, Modern Language Center – TU Berlin) and Duygu Çınga (Undergraduate Preparatory Program, School of Foreign Languages, Istanbul Technical University) will introduce and discuss essential strategies and methods to increase the efficacy of using English as a medium of instruction with a specific focus on the challenges encountered during the summer semester 2020.

The webinar will consist of three parts: In the first part, hosts will introduce three scenarios and lead a discussion with panelists about their experience of teaching in English during the online semester. The scenarios will focus on, among others, issues relating to (1) varying levels of English among students, (2) instructors' self-perception and evaluation in using EMI, (3) and giving effective instructions in English. Each scenario will be followed by a short presentation on potential tips about negotiating related challenges. In the final part, all webinar attendees will have the opportunity to ask their own questions and join the discussion.

Who are the moderators?

Emre Yeşilbaş is an English instructor, researcher and ELT materials writer at TU Berlin. Upon finishing his BA degree in English Language Teaching at METU, Turkey, he completed an MA degree in British Studies at HU Berlin. His current work focuses on the project “Succeed with English as a Medium of Instruction,” a university-wide initiative that was introduced by TU Berlin’s executive board in the summer of 2019 at the Modern Language Center (ZEMS). This project aims to respond to the needs of the increasingly international and diverse academic staff of TU Berlin who use English as a medium of instruction.

Duygu Çınga is an instructor of English at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), where the medium of instruction is either 30% or 100% English in various faculties. Between 2004 and 2011, she taught freshman and sophomore Academic English courses at Middle East Technical University (METU), where English is the only medium of instruction in all faculties. She also worked as a tutor at the Academic Writing Center of METU, offering face-to-face tutorials to postgraduate students, research assistants, and faculty members. Previous Offers: Academic Writing and Coaching

As part of our needs analysis from previous semesters, we have identified that it is vital to offer TU Berlin's academic and teaching staff the opportunity to improve their skills in writing and publishing in English.

As a result of this specific need, we introduced our first courses as part of the project Success with English as a Medium of Instruction in the winter semester 2019/2020. Below you can find a short description of the courses we offered and the feedback we received from participants. We are planning to offer these courses again in the same or similar formats in the upcoming semesters even though we might need to switch to online teaching as a result of the current situation.

Course Description

Academic and Scientific Writing and Coaching (Module I) (B2/C1) (LV 180 / LV 181)

Part I: Elements of Scientific and Academic Writing

This module, aimed at graduate students and research assistants, will help participants become better writers by familiarizing them with the essential skills that are necessary on both a macro level (including organizational elements such as argument & discussion, cause & effect, cohesion, problems & solutions, and academic style), and on a micro level (including syntactical elements such as fundamental academic lexicon, conjunctions, prefixes and suffixes, numbers).

Part II: Individualized Writing Coaching

Date: Individual dates will be determined in consultation with participants.
Time: Two-hour session for each pair  or one-hour session for each participant.

Upon completion of Elements of Scientific and Academic Writing, participants will have the chance to receive individualized feedback on their writing with a one-on-one consultation with the course instructor in order to develop professional editing skills for their own writing.

Feedback from the Participants of LV 180 and LV 181*

* The feedback was collected anonymously after the courses ended.
