LV 183: English for Academics: Writing and Speaking Skills B2

Important Notice: Please note that this course will be conducted with a Blended Learning format. This means that the course will have both online and offline meetings. The meetings will therefore take place both on Zoom and in-person at ZEMS, depending on the current regulations about the pandemic. The number of online or offline meetings will be decided in consultation with the participants in the first meeting.

According to current regulations, each participant and the instructor will be required to wear a protective mask during in-person meetings.

Course Description: This semester-long, practice-oriented course is designed for academic staff who would like to improve their writing and speaking skills in academic and non-academic contexts. This course is particularly well-suited for those who can understand English relatively well but have difficulties in speaking and writing fluently with the help of weekly practice and production sessions.

The speaking component of the course will consist of exercises and role-plays that draw on a range of typical situations encountered in the academic context. Specifically, the course will focus on developing oral presentation skills, making small talk for networking in international conferences, day-to-day communication with colleagues and students, academic and subject-specific vocabulary, and pronunciation and voice training.

The writing component will focus on the essential skills that are necessary on both a macro level (including organizational elements such as introductions and conclusions, argument & discussion, cause & effect, cohesion, problems & solutions, and academic style), and on a micro level (including syntactical elements such as fundamental academic lexicon, conjunctions, prefixes and suffixes, and Latin phrases).

The course will also equip academics with background strategies for effective speaking and writing such as listening and reading strategies, effective note-making, annotating, summarizing, paraphrasing, assessing sources, and relevant applications and programs to develop a Personalized Toolbox for Writing and Oral Presentations.
