English for Specific Purposes: Sustainability C1
Entry requirement:
- C1
Students should make sure they have English C1 as outlined in the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Before registering: the ZEMS online placement test is required. The result should be equivalent to the course entry requirement. Please bring the result with you to class on the first day of teaching.
This English course will emphasize audience-focused writing and presentations. You will learn how to communicate about sustainability to both expert audiences as well as non-expert audiences.
Topics will relate to the social, economic and ecological pillars of sustainability and to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Regardless of what you study or how much or little you know about sustainability, if you are interested in this topic, you are welcome to take this course. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, you will have the opportunity to learn about sustainability from other students in a collaborative environment.
Your grade will be determined by a team presentation and an argumentative paper that center on concrete case-studies within the realm of sustainability. You will choose your own project topics so as to gain experience in English-language research on your chosen topics. In this way, you will train vocabulary and communication styles that are common to your chosen project topics, making the course as ‘tailor-made’ to your needs as possible.
Important: To pass this class, regular attendance is mandatory from the first day of teaching (minimum 80% attendance in Zoom Meetings), and 80% successful completion (at C1 level and following directions) of all ungraded tasks are mandatory.
